San Gabriel Valley Chess Club (SGVCC)
The SGVCC hosts weekly, rated, classical (typically 90 minutes with 5 second delay, although rapid and blitz tournaments sometimes occur there) chess tournaments that require a fee to sign up. Club and USCF Memberships are also required for their tournaments, along with advance registrations. They are currently centered in San Marino and San Gabriel after their Altadena location was affected by the Eason fire.
Located around the Irvine area, Elements of Chess offers paid USCF rated rapid/classical tournaments (30 minutes with delay, combined with other time controls occasionally). They do advance registration but also offers same day registration at the tournament site (for an extra fee). USCF memberships are required.
Centered around Whittier, this club offers free classical rated tournaments (45 minute/5 second delay). No membership is required but you do need a UCSF membership because the tournaments are rated. Registrations should be submitted at least a day before the tournament. This club is rarely active in the school year, but starts up again in the summer.
The Chess Palace is a hole in the wall spot in Garden Grove, CA. They offer amateur, scholastic, weekly and weekend tournaments. Amateur tournaments offers an non-rated section, but the others require a USCF membership to partake in them. They also require a sign-up fee, with an extra cost for same day sign-ups.
Typically centered around West LA (but the venue switches up quite frequently), the International Children Education Association Chess branch offers chess tournaments and lessons (both online and in-person). Tournaments require an USCF membership and a fee to register.
As the name suggests, the Eastvale Chess Club is a chess club that offers rated tournaments in the Eastvale/Chino area (this means this club does require USCF memberships). They require registrations and the tournaments has typically been free. But after their hiatus, they returned with a paid cash prize tournament (updated around 3/25).
